Abstract:
Binary transition metal oxides are studied in this thesis. Ultrathin and epitaxial manganese oxide layers (MnO) on silver single crystals as well as interfaces of transition metals and oxides are investigated.
Structural, electronic and magnetic properties of transition metal oxides in thin multilayers are of fundamental interest. Nickel oxide (NiO) is the most studied compound for the application in magnetic data storage or in the development of spintronic devices. Binary transition metal oxides are reference compounds for the understanding of properties in more complex oxides.
The extend of interface reactions in the multilayer system, the influence of the reduced dimensions and the interface stress on the properties are the important questions to be answered.
The examination was carried out with several techniques such as photoelectron spectroscopy (PES, XPS), photoelectron diffraction (PED, XPD), polarisation-dependent X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS, NEXAFS), electron diffraction (LEED) and theoretical calculations.
