Abstract:

This essay rests on the assumption that one of the main characteristics of The Malcontent is the extraordinary structural "doubleness" of the play. While working out a fictional plot of the utmost cultural seriousness, Marston's manner of employing his formal raw materials is so candidly and wittily offhanded, so archly knowing in its artifice, that the resulting serio-comic vision makes the most confounding demands on its audience.
