Abstract:
This work is an attempt to familiarize both students and scholars with the Phenomenon of Bilingualism in the Arab world. It includes a general introduction to the classic and modern spoken Arabic types as well as a geographic, linguistic and sociological classification of the different dialect groups which can be identified. Through a comparison of these dialects, the common points, differences and general characteristics of the modern spoken Arabic in the different countries should be emphasized. Finally, and in the summary of the results, this analysis deals with the interesting question, whether a particular Arabic dialect might be observed as closer to the standard language.
