Abstract:

The article defends a vision of immigration that underlines that immigrants are citizens and subjects of rights. It does it from a logic contrary to the "repressive liberalism" governing policies related to the "migrant question" in many European countries. After briefly explaining the appearance of the "Immigrant Spain ", the article shows some aspects of the incorporation of immigrants in the labour market and the great contrast that it occurs between the two sides of this phenomenon: the remarkable contribution of the immigrants to the economy and Spanish society, and the unequal treatment and discrimination that some of them. The last part of the article argues that a democratic society, which aspires to be a fair society, must combat discrimination and implement integration policies on, for and with the immigrants and policies on equal opportunities based on the "3R": Redistribution, Recognition and Representation. The end of the text stresses the need to strengthen the (old) Redistribution policies with the (new) policies for the Recognition, because only the latter without the former can lead to undesirable parallel societies.
