Abstract:
Chronic polypoid sinusitis (CPS) in children is a rarely encountered medical condition; whereas, in association with cystic fibrosis (CF) patients frequently show CPS. Both CF and non-CF patients can develop recurrent CPS.
We compared clinic and histopathology of CPS in children and adolescents treated by primary and revision sinus surgery, of which 18 were CF and 72 non-CF patients.
In CPS of primary sinus surgery CF patients yielded prevalent plasma and mast cell findings; findings of mucous glands and the predisposition to dilataion of excretory ducts also were frequent. We observed eosinophils, serous and seromucous glands in non-CF patients more frequently. Compared to primary histopathology, reoperated patients had less characteristic changes in their histological specimens.
